Network television programming isn’t known for being pro-active or high-brow.  Focus groups gather input from viewers to determine our interests and preferences.  Apparently, we have a sweet tooth for quasi-reality programs about fierce competition, deception and random sex.  Apparently we enjoy watching people being humiliated.  (Don’t send me hate mail, all you Survivor, The Bachelor and I Love New York addicts.)  Since the 70s, at least, it has been widely reported that sit-coms are written at a third-grade level.  Networks give us what we want…and can easily digest.

My husband and I have been house-hunting for a few years with zero success.  New construction homes as well as existing structures tend to be enormous brick boxes on concrete slabs (entirely the wrong type of foundation for the shifting blackland prairie soil in North Central Texas.)  All the homes, even those deemed “custom,” look very much the same.  They are too large for our taste, or the lot is too small, or they would be too costly to retrofit with energy-efficient technologies.  Therefore, we continue to rent and to be disappointed with our area’s housing options.

Remember that 1970s flick starring Willie Nelson, Honeysuckle Rose?  I must confess, I own the soundtrack…on vinyl…My favorite tune is a duet between Willie and Diann Cannon where she laments “…there must be two sides to every story…”  This is a sort-of marital reconciliation, in a country music context.  (Come to think of it, a lot of country songs deal with matters of infidelity.)  I love that song, and the lyrics ring true.  Most people, like Willie’s cheating character, and situations are not easily slapped with labels of “good” and “bad.”  Realistically, each of us possesses nearly equal portions of myriad qualities, but most of us strive to do good and be good.  Sometimes events are mixed with complex emotions, as well.  Even seemingly catastrophic ones, like Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
