World's First All-Female Tall Ship Crew
|
Nova Scotia (on the east coast of Canada) is welcoming tall ships from around the word. Tall ships are traditionally rigged vessels – think pirate ships. This year, the one getting all the attention is Unicorn -- the only all-female crewed ship in the world.
The owners of the ship are Dawn and Jay Santamaria. They have four teenaged daughters and when they bought the ship, they decided it was time to create a sailing program to help women break into the mail dominated arena. The Sisters Under Sail Program was launched and in 2006, they sold out. This year’s program provides week-long programs on board as they sail the Atlantic coast between the U.S.A. and Canada.
This is the first year the ship has been all crewed by women. In interviews, Captain Tiffany Krihwan has noted that she is impressed with the cohesiveness of the crew. They overcome the lack of physical force the crew has with mechanical advantages and are having a good time sailing together.
