Earth Mother Goes Shopping

By Christy Ilfrey

As I sip organic, fair trade coffee from a compostable, corn plastic coffee mug, I’m compiling links to green baby products for my mom.  Our parents are thrilled about becoming grandparents, but my mom is ecstatic to the nth degree.  She wants so badly to buy things for the baby – until now, I’ve been reluctant to accept these gifts.  Our move almost complete, and Mom’s eagerness splitting her at the seams, I decided to it was time to let the horse out of the barn.  Giddyap.
Mom insists I look pretty in red (I do NOT) and that I’m “trying to only wear cotton” (No, Mom, ORGANIC cotton—didn’t you read my Dress for Our Planet’s Success piece?)  She bought me a RED, NON-organic cotton tee as my first “maternity item”.  To help her understand my values a bit more, I’ve sent her links to maternity clothes I have had my eye on for a few weeks.  Kid Bean offers Organic Cotton Plus Cup Nursing Bras in snazzy colors, like blueberry, blackberry and chocolate.  (Did someone say chocolate???)  According to my thrifty pregnant friends, a nursing bra may double as a maternity bra.  Round Belly’s organic floral blouse in sunflower yellow-and-white would make any woman happy to be pregnant in summer.  Also comes in a mid-calf length sundress with tie-back.  Perhaps my favorite find is MollyAna Maternity’s organic maternity tees.  I must have one that reads “2nd (the first has a leash)”.  Other must-check-out lines are Blue Canoe and Under the Nile; more options are becoming available every day.

Enough about us moms and moms-to-be—let’s talk about our growing seeds!  Kid Bean and Round Belly both carry plenty of receiving blankets, burp blankets, and baby clothes sewn with organic cotton.  Ecobaby Organics puts it all together: clothing, bedding, toys, even organic cotton diapers. For hemp diapers, try Tiny Tush Natural Baby Boutique , Crickett’s Diapers or Rawganique .  Rawganique’s inventory of organic clothing for mommy and daddy is extensive, as well.

I love the simplicity and gender-neutral qualities of Kate Quinn Organics . Both Japonesk and Momo Baby Round Kimonos and Baby Monkey Pants by Sckoon are stylishly precious. For a more classic line, try Sage Creek Naturals .

Perhaps the most accessible organic baby items are toys.  My friend Angie’s son, Jake, turned one in May, and I wanted to gift him green.  I bought from Kid Bean organic cotton veggies by Under the Nile.  According to Angie, Jake can’t keep them out of his mouth—that’s a great review from a baby! Other online vendors are Sum-Bo-Shine , Alternative Baby , Nature’s Crib and The Playstore

Want to make your own baby food?  Easy and more economical than store brands, homemade baby food can be the pinnacle of nutrition nirvana for your baby.  Vegetarian Baby & Child Online Magazine lists plenty of recipes for baby food.  “Wholesome Baby Foods from Scratch” in the recipes section of The Vegetarian Resource Group’s website describes necessary equipment and methods for making clean, healthy and delicious food for baby.  Several websites tout the So Easy Baby Food Kit as “a complete solution for making healthy, all-natural baby food at home in less than 30 minutes per week.”  The kit retails for approximately $35USD.  (I’ve already asked Mom for one!)

Mrs. Meyers’ Baby Clean Day line will debut online August 1st.  A recent note from the company to existing customers explains they “have been hard at work on a new line of products especially made for little BUNDLES OF JOY.”  I already fell in love with their lavender-scented Automatic Dishwashing Liquid.  Look for the yummy, non-toxic Baby Blossom Freshening Spray!

I’ve finished my coffee and my shopping spree (for today, at least.)  Now I’m off to scrounge for an organic peanut butter snack.
