Joy Nash is an actress with the heart of an activist who has something to say and an audience ready to hear it. She wrote Fat Rant for an acting class six years ago and presented it to her classmates. In Fat Rant, she says "We need to expand our souls, and I think there are a whole lot of fat people out there who need a whole lot more self-confidence. Stop putting life on hold." She was inspired to write this piece after a close friend died of cancer. Instead of being held back by her diagnosis, her friend chose to live every moment. Nash realized that we often let little things become big obstacles in living the life we want. Nash's choices have not been based on her size. She bucked the trend to diet and rebelled against her mother's encouragements that she slim down. She has not felt any pressure to be a smaller size in order to further her acting career. She says there are already enough talented thin actresses to fill the roles for thin women -- what Hollywood needs now is to write great roles for all women, regardless of their size. Instead of waiting for Hollywood to get on the bandwagon, Nash has taken her career into her own hands and is getting ready to pitch a pilot for a sketch comedy that features two underdog characters -- a large woman and a flamboyantly gay man. She also works with friends creating other short films, is aiming to work with cellular phone companies to turn Fat Rant into a download for your phone (Need a pick-me-up? Just look at your phone and get stoked from watching Fat Rant!), and has plans to continue spreading the message of self -acceptance. If you haven't seen Fat Rant, watch it here.
